L’arcipelago della Puglia: cosa fare e vedere durante una vacanza alle Isole Tremiti.

Le Isole Tremiti sono un arcipelago nel Mar Adriatico, fanno parte del Parco Nazionale del Gargano e dal 1989 sono anche Riserva Naturale marina protetta.

Questo è l’unico arcipelago italiano nel basso Adriatico ed è formato da 5 isole: San Domino, San Nicola, Capraia, Cretaccio e Pianosa.

Definite come “perle dell’Adriatico” sono una delle mete più suggestive del Mediterraneo, grazie al mare blu e trasparente, le scogliere rocciose e la natura selvaggia e incontaminata. Un gioiello intatto nel Mar Adriatico, dove soggiornare per una vacanza rilassante a contatto con la natura.

Come arrivare alla Isole Tremiti

Da Termoli, in Molise, è possibile prendere traghetti e aliscafi che conducono alle Isole Tremiti. Si arriva sull’isola di San Domino, l’unica oltre l’isola di San Nicola ad essere abitata.

A San Domino sono concentrate la maggior parte delle strutture ricettive: case vacanze, B&B e residence dove soggiornare durante la vacanza. Anche da Vieste, Peschici e Rodi Garganico (tempo di percorrenza: circa 2 ore) partono traghetti per raggiungere le Isole.

Per vivere un’esperienza a 360º del Gargano, è possibile prendere un elicottero: sicuramente una scelta costosa, ma per un’occasione speciale può essere un’idea da considerare. Dall’eliporto di Foggia arrivata in 20 minuti a San Domino e il panorama è incredibile!

Inoltre su tutte le Isole Tremiti auto o moto non sono ammesse! Le uniche che possono circolare sono quelle dei residenti. Non è un grande problema, viste le ridotte dimensioni delle isole e questo “limite” permette di assaporare a pieno la natura e il mare delle Tremiti.

Cosa vedere alle Isole Tremiti

Isola di San Domino

San Domino è la maggiore delle Isole Tremiti e la più frequentata anche dai turisti. Il nostro consiglio è di visitarla in barca per vedere insenature e grotte nascoste, difficili da raggiungere a piedi, come la grotta del Bue Marino, delle Rondinelle, delle Viole, del Coccodrillo e delle Murene.

Cala delle Arene è l’unica spiaggia sabbiosa a San Domino. È frequentata da molti turisti e famiglie per via della sabbia e dei fondali bassi e per la presenza di lidi attrezzati con bar e ristoranti. A pochi passi dalla spiaggia si trova la Grotta dell’Arenile lunga ben 10 metri.

L’isola di San Domino è un gioiellino abbracciato dal mare cristallino e dalla vegetazione selvaggia dei pini d’Aleppo: tutti il centro dell’isola è ricoperto da una fitta e rigogliosa pineta che scende fino al mare. È possibile esplorare la pineta attraverso tre sentieri: Strada della Pineta, Strada Comunale della Cantina Sperimentale, Strada comunale del faro di San Domino. Munitevi di scarpe adatte alle rocce e di vestiti comodi per camminare tra rocce e vegetazione, ma anche del costume da bagno perché incontrerete tante calette e grotte da cui tuffarsi!

Quest’isola è conosciuta anche come “Isola di Lucio Dalla”: il cantautore aveva una casa qui, su Cala Matana, il suo rifugio, dove trascorreva molti giorni dell’anno e una sala di registrazione. L’isola è stata fonte d’ispirazione per molte delle sue canzoni, come Luna Matana, e oggi la sua voce risuona ancora nei locali e ristoranti.

Isola di San Nicola

San Nicola è il centro storico e amministrativo dell’arcipelago e l’isola che conserva più monumenti storici. Il santuario di Santa Maria a Mare, fondato dai monaci benedettini nel 1045, conserva ancora gli interni dell’epoca dei Monaci, pavimenti a mosaico dell’XI secolo e un crocifisso del XIII secolo; il Castello dei Badiali fu costruito per volere di Carlo D’Angiò per proteggere il Monastero di Santa Maria a Mare dagli attacchi nemici. Il torrione Angioino sorge imponente e sovrasta l’isola e tutto il mare.

Da non perdere il Torrione del Cavaliere del Crocifisso e il Castello dei Badiali. L’isola è quindi un museo a cielo aperto che narra la storia dell’arcipelago attraverso le sue opere.

Le altre isole dell’arcipelago

  • Capraia: il suo nome deriva dai capperi, molto diffusi sull’isola. È totalmente disabitata e non è possibile sbarcare qui. Però se fate un’escursione in barca, vi fermerete a pochi metri dalla riva dove poter ammirare i fondali che custodiscono una statua di Padre Pio, realizzata dallo scultore foggiano Domenico Norcia e calata nel mare il 3 ottobre 1998. Inoltre su quest’isola si trova Architiello, un ponte naturale lungo 6 metri; si racconta che se gli innamorati si scambiano promesse d’amore qui sotto, queste dureranno per sempre.

  • Pianosa: anch’essa è completamente disabitata. Raggiunge i 15 metri sopra il livello del mare e durante le mareggiate viene quasi completamente sommersa. Fa parte della Riserva Marina Integrale, questo vuol dire che è assolutamente vietato approdare e navigare nelle vicinanze, ma anche fare immersioni se non accompagnati da guide subacquee autorizzate. Ecco perché le acquee dell’Isola di Pianosa, così come quelle dell’intero arcipelago, sono limpide e trasparenti e le più spettacolari delle Tremiti.

 

  • Cretaccio: questo grande scoglio, è un ponte naturale tra San Domino e San Nicola. In passato c’era il pilone di un possente ponte che collegava le due isole. L’isola è avvolta da una leggenda: si dice che sia abitata da fantasmi, perché qui fu giustiziato un prigioniero, il cui fantasma ancora arrabbiato per l’accaduto si aggira durante le notti tempestose.

Cosa fare alle Isole Tremiti

Vivere la bellezza naturale delle Isole Tremiti è l’esperienza per eccellenza da fare. Le immersioni sono l’attività migliore da fare per visitare queste isole. In barca o a nuoto è possibile vedere tante calette e grotte nascoste, dalle sfumature più diverse e incantevoli. Ci sono più di 50 punti di immersione; i più belli sono: lo Scoglio dell’Elefante sulla costa di San Domino e i punti dell’isola di Caprara, in particolare la zona di Punta Secca, dove a 42 metri di profondità si aprono due archi rocciosi naturali, e lo Scoglio del Corvo, i cui fondali pullulano di spugne e pesci di tutti i tipi.

I fondali delle Isole Tremiti custodiscono una fauna e flora ricchissima da proteggere. Ecco perché è necessario essere ben informati sulle immersioni e su dove poterle fare.

La leggenda di Diomede

Le isole Tremiti sono chiamate anche isole Diomedee, dal nome dell’eroe greco di Omero, a cui è legata una leggenda.

Diomede, re di Argo e compagno di Ulisse, ritornato in patria dopo la Guerra di Troia e scoperta la congiura omicida contro di lui dalla moglie Egialea e dal suo amante, partì nuovamente il mare e si fermò sulle coste del Gargano dove sposò la figlia del re Dauno.

Qui segnò i confini del suo nuovo regno, la Daunia. Rimasero tre grandi massi inutilizzati che Diomede gettò in mare e questi emergendo dall’acqua, diedero origine all’isola di San Domino, San Nicola e Capraia.

Inoltre Diomede morì durante un duello e Venere trasformò i suoi compagni in uccelli, detti Diomedee: il loro verso è simile a quello di un pianto che veglia ancora oggi sulla sua tomba.
